Job Title: Ground Maintenance Worker I Shift Schedule: 6:00AM - 2:30 PM , Monday through Friday. Schedules may be adjusted based on season or circumstance. Overtime as required. Subject to being called 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for emergencies due to inclement weather conditions. Must carry Authority provided cell phone, or other communication device when off duty (as assigned) and during snow season .

JOB SUMMARY: This position is primarily responsible for performing those duties assigned to the exterior maintenance and repair of the airport's facility and equipment including runways, taxiways, perimeter fencing, grounds, roadways, and parking lots.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The following duties are typical for this position. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Perform physical labor required to maintain exterior grounds, grass, pavement, fencing, garages, etc. to include cleaning grounds, emptying trash, mowing grass, raking leaves, mulching, maintaining flower beds, trimming hedges and trees, blowing and edging, tree removal, repairing potholes and storm drains.
- Keep drains and catch basins clear.
- Pressure wash, wax and polish signs, terminal buildings, sidewalks and parking booths.
- Touch up road markings on roadways and parking lots and possibly runways and taxiways.
- Move office furniture, planters, etc. as directed.
- Plant trees and shrubs.
- Operate all equipment and tools safely and properly, as directed.
- Observes safety and security procedures, uses equipment and materials properly and reports potentially unsafe conditions.
- Perform snow removal duties to include shoveling, spreading sand, operate snow removal equipment and clear snow from runways and taxiways.
- Performs all other duties as assigned and directed.
- Adhere to all Authority personnel policies and departmental guidelines.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: The following generally describes the knowledge, skills and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
- Knowledge of use of various hand tools.
- Ability to perform simple, manual tasks on a continuous basis.
- Ability to perform extended walking, standing, climbing, pushing, pulling, bending, shoveling and heavy lifting.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to understand verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to pursue training and development activities and strive to continuously build knowledge and skills.
EDUCATION/TRAINING : - High school graduate or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE: - Six months' work experience in this field.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :
- Possess a valid driver's license and must meet NAA driving record requirements.
- Ability to obtain and maintain eligibility to hold a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge as may be required by assigned job duties and responsibilities.
EQUIPMENT OPERATION: Various automotive equipment, heavy equipment such as snowplows and front-end loaders. Shop machinery such as mowers, leaf blowers, dump trucks and street sweepers on a regular basis.
PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS: Persons with disabilities may be able to perform the essential duties of this class with reasonable accommodation. The employee frequently is required to bend, stoop, squat, stand and walk. The employee must be able to assist in pushing and pulling planters, office furniture and other heavy equipment. The employee must be able to perform extended shoveling and be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Employee must demonstrate the ability to perform these essential functions during their physical examinations.
WORKING CONDITIONS/HAZARDS: Noise from aircraft and heavy and motorized equipment. Outdoor work is required in inclement weather to include extreme cold, heat, high winds, rain and snow.
DRIVING RECORD REQUIREMENTS: All drivers must be at least
21 years of age, licensed for at least
3 years, have the type of license required by their state for the vehicles operated and meet the following driving record standards.
- License is active and NOT suspended.
- Any employee or applicant who has been licensed in their state for less than 3 years must provide a copy of their previous driving record to Human Resources.
- An employee or applicant may have a North Carolina or Virginia driver's license as long as they reside in that state.
- An "unacceptable" DMV driving record includes the following violations during the most recent 3-year period:
Committing a Felony with a Motor Vehicle
DWI/DUI
Drug Offense
Eluding a Police Officer
Foreign citizens with no historical driving record available to us
Hit Run / Leaving the Scene of an accident
Lending an Operator's License or Registration to Another
Open Container Violation
Passing a Stopped School Bus
Racing or Speed Contest Violation
Reckless Driving
Speeding 25 mph, or more, above speed limit
Suspended License History - Drivers who have had 3 or more license suspensions as a result of moving violations
Temporary Operator's Permit
Two or more at fault accident convictions
Vehicle Manslaughter/Homicide
Three or more moving violations within the past 12 months
Note: Texting or cell phone violations are considered moving violations because they increase the chance of being in an accident.
